Tachibana Makoto absolutely, positively, most definitely was going to grow up to be Nanase Haruka's bride. He had to be! Haruka was obviously the dashing prince from his storybooks! None of the bullies bothered him, he wasn't scared of thunderstorms, and he even rescued a cat from a tree last weekend. He was totally a prince! Which meant Makoto was the princess he was going to marry. He liked sweets, cute animals, and was scared when the prince was brave! Prince Haruka always saved Princess Makoto when he most needed it! They were destined to get married, just like in the books! The only problem was they were both 6 years old, and Makoto wasn't a girl like the princesses usually were. He wasn't sure what to do. “Makoto,” Haruka spoke, looking over the other boy's shoulder. Makoto jumped a bit, having forgotten he was reading his book of princess tales on Haruka's back porch. “Haru-chan, you startled me!” Haruka gave him an annoyed look. Makoto laughed and held the book up for the other boy to see. “I was reading about princes and princesses. I think you'd make a great prince, Haru-chan, just like this one – he saves the Princess from the dragon.” Haruka didn't look overly impressed. “I want to be the princess...but...I can't be.” Makoto laughed, blushing.

“Yes, you can.” Haruka replied.

Makoto felt embarrassed. “No, Haru-chan, I'm not a girl...”

“Who always saves you?”

“You...”

“Who is scared of ghosts?”

“Me...”

“Does the prince save the princess from monsters like I save you from the bullies?”

“Yeah...but-”

“Then if I am the prince, you are the princess.” Haruka said it with such finality that the conversation was deemed over. Makoto smiled at his best friend, feeling reassured that he indeed could be the princess to Haruka's prince. He was most definitely going to marry him when he was all grown up!
